The NICU at Children's of Alabama is a Level IV unit with 48 private rooms available for neonates and infants. Our unit houses 4 ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) rooms, and it is the only unit in the state that provides dialysis for premature infants.\\r\\n\\r\\nPatients are referred from other hospitals primarily for surgical and subspecialty care, with diagnoses that include:\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\tPersistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN)\\r\\n\\tSevere Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD)\\r\\n\\tGastroschisis, omphalocele, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)\\r\\n\\tNeural tube defects\\r\\n\\tMultiple congenital anomalies, genetic syndromes\\r\\n\\tRenal anomalies and renal failure\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\nTreatments and Monitoring offered at Children\\u2019s of Alabama include:\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\tNear Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)\\r\\n\\tNeurologically Assisted Ventilation (NAVA)\\r\\n\\tHemofiltration and Dialysis (Aquadex and Peritoneal Dialysis)\\r\\n\\tExtracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)\\r\\n\\tHome ventilation\\r\\n\\tGastrostomy tube placement\\r\\n\\tIntestinal Rehabilitation (IR) for short gut physiology\\r\\n\\tNeurosurgical procedures such as shunt placements and neural tube defect repair\\r\\n\\tPolysomnography (sleep study)\\r\\n\\tFEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing)\\r\\n\\tMandibular distractions\\r\\n\\tTracheostomy\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\nOur medical team includes:\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\tNeonatologists and neonatal fellows\\r\\n\\tPediatric surgeons and surgical fellows\\r\\n\\tNeonatal nurse practitioners\\r\\n\\tRespiratory therapists\\r\\n\\tDischarge planning team with nursing educators\\r\\n\\tNICU dedicated pharmacists (2)\\r\\n\\tNutritionists, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, and child life therapists\\r\\n\\tPalliative care team, social workers, and pastoral care team\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\nNeonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners are in house to provide 24-7 care.\\r\\n\\r\\nTelephone Numbers for the NICU:\\r\\nQuarterback: 205-638-9480\\r\\nHarbert: 205-638-5471\\r\\nToll Free: 888-820-6593 (parents only)\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\nWe provide a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care and practice family-centered rounding. In addition to rounds by the NICU team, there is regular, active participation in patient care from the palliative and supportive care team, intestinal rehabilitation team, and the multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental team. Support of family structures including stress management, grief support, and enhancement of coping skills is also provided by our two NICU dedicated social workers. Our RN staff are especially skilled in the assessment and treatment of infants with complex, multisystem dysfunction. The nurse to patient ratio is usually 1:2 or 1:1 depending on acuity of the patient.
